Fiveshock's History
Shocking All Five Senses for 25 Years
Fiveshock was launched on August 1, 2000, by entrepreneur, media designer, and composer Ed Melendez, with a bold vision to create something unique and tangible in an era where the virtual world was rapidly expanding. As the dot-com boom was winding down, Fiveshock set out to leverage the emerging "New Media Revolution" to help businesses and brands not only survive but thrive in a digital age.
The company’s first challenge was to develop a practical philosophy and execute a focused strategy. After numerous brainstorming sessions, Fiveshock created a groundbreaking approach they now call “Shocking All Five Senses.” This method has propelled the company to become a creative force in building memorable and impactful brands. By designing intuitive, accessible, and engaging experiences, Fiveshock has set itself apart as a leader in the creative industry.
Fiveshock's first client was the GPS start-up Vector 1020, followed by a series of high-profile clients in the Los Angeles talk radio industry, including radio icons Marc Germain, Larry Elder, Tammy Bruce, and Doug McIntyre. The company also worked with KABC Radio, managing websites for the entire 3 pm-midnight weekday lineup, featuring Al Rantel, Kim Serafin, and San Diego’s Steve Yuhas. In 2005, Fiveshock expanded its portfolio by building the online presence of California radio personality Martha Montelongo and developing the digital campaign for the “Yes” on Proposition 90 California ballot initiative.
In 2006, Fiveshock embraced motion and animation, adding these dynamic elements to their repertoire. They created compelling animations and films for organizations like the YMCA and Disney’s Amy Senstad. With the addition of sound design, Fiveshock began composing and recording original scores for television productions, independent films, radio jingles, commercials, and documentaries. In 2008, Fiveshock began scoring video games for new developer Bakno, producing original scores for titles such as MahJong, Punk Trader, Xplorer, and Island Racer.
Over the years, Fiveshock has collaborated with a diverse range of clients, including startups, political figures, and TV personalities like Bravo's Dr. Venus Nicolino from L.A. Shrinks, as well as established corporations like Yamaha and Sony. The company has also worked with entrepreneurs such as Israel Barrera of Cabella Hair and launched brands for companies like EZStepper Horse Shoes and GeckoPad.
In late 2025, Fiveshock Design is looking to expanded with the launch of Minstrel Scores, an independent scoring and production house, further solidifying its commitment to music composition. Minstrel Scores offers a complete audio library of original scores, available to subscribers, enhancing Fiveshock’s ability to provide comprehensive creative services.
As Fiveshock continues to push the boundaries of creativity, the journey is far from over. With an eye on the future, Fiveshock is excited to shape the next decade of innovation, always striving to create unforgettable experiences for their clients and their audiences. Here is to the next 25 years.
