More Daylight? It’s Time For Sunscreen

Now, don’t be fooled by the fact that you’re not bathing in the sun on a sandy beach…with the advent of Spring comes more sunlight and more UVA light…which causes 90% of wrinkles on your skin.

But don’t despair…there are a plethora of products out there to help. From sunscreen alone to foundations with sunscreen added.

So, how does sunscreen (SPF or sun protection factor) work? Well, if you begin to burn after 10 minutes in the sun, an SPF of 10 would allow you 100 minutes (or just over 1 ½ hours) before beginning to burn. But don’t get too excited about the SPF numbers above 15…most of that is hydration…so if you choose an SPF above 15, calculate it as if it were 15. And you must reapply your protection if you swim.

Most products have the SPF labeled on the front, and all protect from UVB rays, but there is not a product developed yet that protects 100% from UVA rays.

Here are a few products to look for:

Face:
La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Lait SPF 60 – It contains the chemical 'Mexoryl,' well-known all over the world to protect skin from wrinkle-causing UVA rays. Dr. Vincent DeLeo, chairman of dermatology at Columbia University states that Mexoryl, “It produces a product which gives us almost perfect protection against sunshine.”

Kielhl's Ultra Protection Water-Based Sunscreen Lotion SPF 25 – It’s water-based and oil-free, so it’s perfect for the face.

For Dry Skin: Eucerin Extra Protective moisture lotion SPF 30
For Oily Skin:  Aveda's Dual Nature Face Protection SPF15 Skincare
All Skin Types: Olay Total Effects UV Protection

Body:

Bull Frog Superblock Sunblock Lotion, SPF 45 – Experts highly recommend this long-lasting sunblock that is especially great for fair skin.

Finding Those Discontinued Favorites

We’ve all experienced this…you fall in love with a certain lipstick or foundation, use it for years and suddenly…it’s DISCONTINUED…EEEEK!!! We’ll don’t despair…there’s hope…

There are actually several companies that will sell a discontinued color directly to the consumer until it is gone. Estee Lauder (makers of Clinique, Prescriptives, Stila, Bobbi Brown, MAC, La Mer, Aveda, Origins, Jo Malone, American Beauty, Good Skin) has a ‘Gone But Not Forgotten’ program which does exactly that. Others (Hard Candy, Benefit and Revlon) will sell their discontinued items to outlets and discounters. And there are even closeout and auction sites (i.e. eBay) that offer out-of-stock makeup.

So, let’s say you searched and still were unable to find that favorite. What then? Well, there’s a store called Three Custom Color which will duplicate almost any cosmetic, except pencils and nail polish, from a tiny sample. Now that’s priceless!

I’ve gathered some information that I feel will help in such a crisis…hope it aids in your search:

Discontinued Programs:
First try to contact the company by phone (the phone number is usually on the back of the bottle or package). The following companies, among others, have specific programs:

Gone But Not Forgotten: Run by Estee Lauder, which is the parent company of Clinique, Estee Lauder, Bobbi Brown, and Bumble + Bumble, etc. If your product was discontinued in the last two years, they mat still have it. Call: 646-602-7725.

Goodbyes: This program is run by M*A*C. 1-800-588-0070 or
http://www.maccosmetics.com/templates/products/picks.tmpl?pagename=macgoodbyes

Kiehl's: The company doesn’t have an official program but it helps customers find discontinued products until they are out. If you can’t visit a store personally, call 1-800-543-4572.
Guerlain: Store personnel can sometimes track down long-gone products, however customers can also call 1-800-815-7720 for help.

Matches:
If you've given up hope, these companies will try to match that once-available lipstick that is "you"…

The Powder Room, 13023 Bustleton Ave. 215-969-0661, http://www.thepowderroomonline.biz/  The owner, Julie Weiss-Schwartz, can re-create lipsticks, lip gloss, and a host of other products. A tube of "cloned" lipstick costs $25 and you can even name it what you like.

Three Custom Color: 1-888-262-7714, www.threecustom.com . Send a snip of your eyebrow hair for a matching gel or a strip of that couch fabric for a coordinating lipstick.

Wedding Alert!!! Can’t find a match for that bridesmaid's dress? These color specialists will even create colors to complement the most hideous hue. (So, if it’s that bad, you can always use the rest for a masquerade party!)

Lighten Up, You Hair Color That Is...

Warmer temps bring the desire to lighten up those tresses...but what's the best way to go about a new shade?

Well, if you're a brunette like I was (above), you'll need to get yourself a pro to do the job. My friend is a colorist and it took 3 years, little-by-little to get me to a natural golden highlighted brunette. Attempting this youself can be disasterous. Your hair color may not appear to have any red tones in it, but all dark hair contains some red pigment. So, lightening your hair in one step will most likely turn your hair a bright, unattractive shade of orange that hasn't been popular since the mid-1500's.
Before
After
Highlighting with the new kits is safe and only affects the top layer of your hair. But a true highlight takes a pro. In my case, my friend highlighted my hair incrementally and eventually changed the overall appearance. But, you may need to undergo what is known as a "double process." Step one is to "strip" the hair of its pigment. The second step is to "add" your new color of choice. Sound complicated? It is. An excellent likelihood of orangey results. This can be prevented by a professional colorist, who can use a toner to cancel out redness, providing a more attractive golden hue.

Go ahead and treat yourself to a new shade or highlight...it will be a lift for your appearance...and a little lift for your heart!

Tip - Tired of stains on your towels when your makeup remover doesn't get it all? Buy a pack of inexpensive washcloths to use on your face instead.
